The Carpetbaggers is the title of a 1961 bestselling novel by Harold Robbins, which was adapted into a 1964 film of the same title.
The term "carpetbagger" has the generic meaning of a presumptuous newcomer who enters a new territory seeking success. It derived from ambitious Northerners who flocked to the Post-Civil-War South (carrying their clothes and possessions in a handbag made of carpet material), seeking opportunities to help newly-enfranchised black citizens run for political office—in return for various favors. In this novel, the territory is the movie industry, and the newcomer is a wealthy heir to an industrial fortune who, like Howard Hughes, simultaneously pursued aviation and moviemaking avocations

The Godfather is a crime novel written by American author Mario Puzo, originally published in 1969 by G. P. Putnam's Sons. It details the story of a fictitious Sicilian Mafia family based in New York City (and Long Beach, NY) and headed by Don Vito Corleone, who became synonymous with the Italian Mafia. The novel covers the years 1945 to 1955, and also provides the backstory of Vito Corleone from early childhood to adulthood.
The book introduced Italian criminal terms like consigliere, caporegime, Cosa Nostra, and omertà to an English-speaking audience.
It formed the basis for a 1972 film of the same name. Two film sequels, with new contributions made by Puzo, were made in 1974 and 1990. The first and second film are widely considered to be two of the greatest films of all time

RE: Koleksi Whizz

Marko Ramius, a Lithuanian who has risen to high levels of trust in the Soviet Navy, intends to defect to the United States with his officers and the experimental nuclear submarine Red October, a Typhoon-class submarine equipped with a revolutionary stealth propulsion system. The propulsion system is described as a pumpjet system nicknamed "Caterpillar Drive", making sonar detection extremely difficult. The result, as is immediately apparent to Jack Ryan and the admirals in the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is a strategic weapon platform that is capable of sneaking its way into American home waters and launching nuclear missiles with little or no warning.
It is also not lost upon Ramius, whose defection is spurred by several other factors as well. In particular he is deeply affected by the death of his wife due to a doctor's incompetence. Because the doctor was the son of a Politburo member, he was above reproach. His wife's untimely death, in conjunction with a long-standing dissatisfaction with the callousness of the Soviet establishment towards its sailors and the fear of the destabilizing effect of the Red October in world affairs, ultimately exhausts Ramius' tolerance for the Soviet system's failings.
In the beginning of the novel, Ramius kills Political Officer Ivan Putin to ensure he will not interfere with the defection. In a letter to Admiral Yuri Padorin (whom Ramius refers to as Uncle Yuri), Ramius states that he is going to defect. This has the same purpose and effect as Hernán Cortés' burning of his ships in the new world: it destroys the possibility of retreat and leaves no option for his men but to press on and win or die. The entire Soviet Northern Fleet (with the specific exception of missile submarines, to avoid confusion) is deployed to sink the Red October, approaching under the cover story of a search and rescue mission well within 400 km (about 250 miles) of the American coast, an excellent place to start a war of aggression if the explanations cannot be trusted.
Jack Ryan, a naval historian turned CIA analyst, deduces Ramius' plans. The U.S. high command agrees warily, while also planning for contingencies in case the Soviet Fleet has other intentions than their stated cover. As tensions rise between the U.S. and Soviet fleets, the crew of the USS Dallas, a Los Angeles class attack submarine, stumble across the secret to detecting the Red October. Ryan must contact the Red October's rebellious captain to prevent the loss of a decisive technological advantage. Through a combination of circumstances, Ryan becomes responsible for seeing the sub - and Ramius - to safety from the pursuing Soviet fleet. The U.S., in order to make the Soviets believe that the Red October has been destroyed, rescues its crew after Ramius declares a shipboard emergency; he and the officers heroically stay aboard to scuttle the submarine. Shortly thereafter, a decommissioned US ballistic missile submarine, the Ethan Allen, is blown up underwater. These two events fool the Soviets into thinking that the Red October has been lost. However, a GRU agent masquerading as a ship's cook attempts to destroy the Red October from within by firing a missile engine, hoping to incinerate the ship. During the confrontation with the agent, one of Ramius' top officers is killed, while Ramius and a British officer who boarded the vessel with Ryan are wounded. The agent is eventually killed by Ryan in the sub's missile compartment.
Meanwhile Captain Tupolev, the captain of a Soviet Alfa-class attack submarine and a former student of Ramius, while trailing what he thinks to be an Ohio-class submarine, realizes that it is the October, and pursues it. The two U.S. submarines escorting the Red October are unable to fire due to rules of engagement, and as a result the October is torpedoed but survives. After a tension-filled standoff, leading to the Red October sinking Tupolev's submarine by ramming it broadside, the Americans guide Red October safely into the eight-ten dry dock in Norfolk, VA.
The final piece of the deception involves the recovery of a pressure meter on the deep ocean floor by a US Navy deep exploration/salvage sub through sleight-of-manipulator, in the presence of a Russian military attache. This proves the wreck of the Ethan Allen is the Red October, as far as the Soviets are concerned. Now they only have to find the attack sub that disappeared at the same time...

RE: Koleksi Whizz

In the present tense prologue, which takes place in 1985, Rose Daniels's husband, Norman, beats her while she is four months pregnant, causing her to suffer a miscarriage. Rose briefly considers leaving Norman but dismisses the idea: Norman is a policeman, and is excellent at finding people. Norman also has a violent temper and was recently accused of assaulting an African-American woman named Wendy Yarrow. The subsequent lawsuit and Internal Affairs investigation has made him even more volatile.
The story then jumps ahead to a morning nine years later, when Rose is making the bed. She notices a drop of blood on the sheet that had probably leaked from her nose the night before — Norman had punched her in the face for spilling some iced tea on him. Rose realizes that she has passively suffered through Norman's abuse for fourteen years and that if she continues to put up with this treatment, she might be killed. But then Rose wonders: what if Norman doesn't kill her? What will she be like after fourteen more years of Norman "talking to her right up close", as he puts it?
Rose (who whimsically begins to think of herself as "Rosie Real", in homage to Maurice Sendak's children's musical Really Rosie) then makes the difficult decision to leave her home, located in an unnamed city in the Northeast and take the first bus out of town. After Rose arrives at her destination, an unnamed city in the Midwest, she is disoriented and afraid. When she arrives at the bus station, she meets a man named Peter, to whom she briefly describes her situation, and she is given directions to a women's shelter called "Daughters and Sisters", or D&S for short. There, she quickly makes several friends and, with the help of the D&S director, gets an apartment and a job as a hotel housekeeper.
A few weeks later Rose decides to pawn her engagement ring, but learns that it is worthless. Before she leaves the pawnshop, however, she notices a painting of a woman in a rose madder gown and immediately falls in love with it. She trades her ring for the painting, which strangely enough has no artist's signature. Outside, a stranger asks her to read a passage from a novel, and is so impressed that he offers her a job recording audio books. Then, one of the workers at the pawnshop, Bill Steiner, asks her out. It seems that after suffering for years, Rose finally has everything she could want: a great job, a home of her own, friends and a man who loves her.
Unfortunately for Rose, Norman is determined to punish her for leaving him. Using his excellent tracking skills, he finds out where Rose went and begins to hunt her down. While Norman gets closer to finding Rose (and begins to lose what little self-control he has), Rose discovers that her new painting is not as ordinary as it appears.
For one thing, its image expands to show more of the painting's world. For another, Rose finds that she is able to enter the painting, much like how Alice steps through her mirror in Through the Looking-Glass. And on the other side, there is a woman called Dorcas who resembles Wendy Yarrow, and the woman in the rose-madder gown. Rose never learns this woman's real name so she refers to her as "Rose Madder", not only because of her outfit but also because she is insane and possibly dangerous. King provides many hints that the world of the painting is also the world of The Dark Tower, most notably references to the city of Lud.
Rose Madder asks Rose to rescue her baby from an underground labyrinth which is the demesne of a one-eyed bull called Erinyes (who appears to have been based on the Minotaur). Rose does so, and Rose Madder promises to repay her. Rose returns to her world and puts the strange incident at the back of her mind, but when Norman attacks some of her friends from D&S, murders the director, and then follows her to her apartment, she realizes that she will need a little help from Rose Madder.
Rosie tricks Norman into following her into the world of the painting, where he meets a particularly violent and gruesome end at the hands of Rose Madder. Rosie returns to her world and leads a normal life with no further summons from Rose Madder. She marries Bill and has a daughter but finds that the violent rages which characterized both Norman and Rose Madder have begun to spring up within her. She then remembers that Rose Madder, perhaps foreseeing the problem, gave her some magic seeds and told her to "remember the tree". Rosie plants the seeds in a secret grove by her favorite lake and finds the seeds grow into a beautiful but deadly tree.
